Pre-modern Art Gallery (1F)

Hiraga Gennai (1728 - 79), a herb natural historian in the middle of Edo Period, captured the attention of the people as an electric inventor. We will introduce approximately 110 works of Gennai ware, which Hiraga Gennai made. Its style is quite unique and surpasses the three-color brilliant style of Kouchi ware. The characteristics of of Gennai ware are unique, bright, complex vessels which have an elegant overglaze motifs include world maps and Chinese/Japanese pictorial subjects. The original knowledge that reflects his western-style motif and design seemed to have been acquired while he was studying in Nagasaki away from home. His works contain abundant content, which stimulate intellectual curiosity and are still novel in the eyes of the people in modern times.
