Exhibition period:Sep.11-23,2012
The Japan Art Institute was established by Okakura Tenshin in 1898.
Yokoyama Taikan and others, under the guidance of Tenshin,
attempted the modernization of Japanese-style painting.
While having its basis in tradition,
the spirit of Tenshin and others who aimed toward innovative
art expression is inherited today through the periods of
Taisho (1912-1926) to the Showa (1926-1989).
In commemoration of the 100 th anniversary of Okakura Tenshin's passing,
this exhibition with the masterpieces by the brilliant artists will introduce
the fascination of Japanese-style paintings,
by tracing the history of the Japan Art Institute from
the Meiji Era till contemporary times.
