Peranakans who settled in Southeast Asia including Singapore have been forming their hybrid culture over several hundreds of years. The combination of kebaya, upper garment and batik sarong symbolizes their culture. Focusing on the collections of the Asian Civilisations Museum and the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Kip Lee in Singapore, we will unfold the multilayered cultures in Singapore as well as their association with Japan from the viewpoint of fashion in the 18th to 20th centuries.
