Since ancient times, Fukuoka City has developed through international exchange, growing and flourishing as a gateway to Asia. In this historical context, the Fukuoka Art Museum opened in 1979 and has engaged with city residents as we build a collection that is highly diverse in terms of both era and region. We are proud to say that no other museum in Japan boasts such a varied collection. In 2019, the 40th anniversary of the museum’s opening, we reopened after a large-scale renovation aimed at making the museum more accessible to the community, open to diversity, and conducive to interpersonal interaction. Building on our history thus far, the Fukuoka Art Museum will continue pursuing our core activities of collection, conservation, research, exhibition, and education, fulfilling the mission stated above as we advance to the next stage of our journey.
