TOMITA Keisen Commemorating the 130th Anniversary of His Birth

The Japanese-style painter Tomita Keisen of Hakata who studied painting in Kyoto and was commended by Yokoyama Taikan, was active in the Saiko-inten Exhibitions. His works, with the characteristics of free-spirited brush strokes and vividly elegant colors, emitted the brilliance in the Japanese art circle from the Taisho to Showa Periods. This exhibition catalog is compiled of 134 works from Tomita's early period to the late period, with a biography and a bibliographical list that unique oeuvres are comprehensively introduced. Fukuoka and Unkoku School- Mysteries of Panel Paintings of Castle "Plum Trees and Crows"

"Plum Trees and Crows" of the Kyoto National Museum Collection has traditionally been said to be painted by Unkoku Togan for the Chikuzen Najima Castle and it was later placed in the Fukuoka Castle after it was built. However, an alternate theory has been raised that the crows were painted by Tougan's son, Toueki; thus what was traditionally said about the paintings Najima Castle become questionable. By exhibiting the work, we can ponder on the mysteries that surround the panel paintings of crows. Only in Japanese.
